Is it better to hire a local attorney?

It’s often best to hire a local lawyer or attorney, as this will ensure that they’re familiar with the laws specific to your region. While West Virginia lawyers will be familiar with the laws of the state, your local attorney can assist you within your county. Choose from UpCounsel’s community of West Virginia attorneys to find a lawyer who is best suited to help you.

What should I look for when hiring a lawyer?

The first thing to look for is competence and experience in the legal field you’re hiring them for. Check their legal fees and ensure they’re within your price range. Also, be sure to talk with them to get an understanding of how they operate as a person—you want to be able to trust them to represent you.

Do you pay a lawyer before or after?

Usually, legal fees are paid, as they’re required. However, some West Virginia attorneys may require a retainer fee upfront. Check with the law firm to avoid any issues later.

Clarification on Phantom Stock Agreement Exercise and Payouts

John Allen Waldrop

"I recently hired John to review a quick contract and provide some feedback. Instead of sending the feedback via text, as I’d expected, John (or his account team) insisted on scheduling a Zoom meeting, which was fine, though not my preference. During the call, John took some time to refresh his memory on the contract, so much of the review happened live on the call rather than beforehand. A couple of weeks later, I received a second invoice for the meeting that he had insisted on, and the total was higher than anticipated. I was billed for 1.5 hours, though it felt like the initial 30-minute call was the first time he’d reviewed the contract. When I questioned the charges, I noticed that the invoice his team sent didn’t even match the invoice charges in UpCounsel. At this point, I didn’t want to continue disputing it, so I left it alone. On the positive side, John was polite, professional, and prompt in his responses, but I didn’t feel I received the value I paid for, and I wouldn’t recommend his services based on this experience."
