An EIN Number Florida — also known as an Employer Identification Number, Federal Tax ID Number, or TIN — is a government-issued number that the IRS uses to identify specific businesses. All businesses in every state have an EIN. If you run a business in Florida, you can easily apply for an EIN in several ways.
Employer Identification Number in Florida
All businesses in the United States have to register and obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN). This number is used for corporate registration and tax filing. The IRS and other government agencies use an EIN to identify a specific business. The nine-digit number appears in this format: 12-3456789.
Anyone who starts a business chooses a representative, also known as a Registered Agent. This is the person who applies for an EIN. He or she should apply as soon as possible. A new business should have its EIN before doing any of the following:
- Making a deposit
- Filing a return
- Performing any tax-related action
An EIN is similar to a social security number for a person, except it's for businesses. Although it's called an Employer Identification Number, a company doesn't need to have employees to have an EIN.
Businesses use an EIN to do the following:
- File taxes
- Open business checking, savings, or investment accounts
- Handle employee payroll, if applicable
- Obtain credit cards for the business
- Obtain lines of credit for business loans
- Apply for business licenses
Once you incorporate your company, you must apply for an EIN for tax purposes. If you operate a sole proprietorship, don't use your Social Security Number when you file business tax returns. If you don't yet have an EIN, write “applied for” and the date you applied for it in the space for your EIN.
If you've lost, forgotten, or misplaced your EIN, you can locate it in the following ways:
- The confirmation notice that the IRS sent you when you applied for your EIN has your tax ID number on it.
- Your EIN is on any paperwork associated with your company. This includes bank accounts and other applications for local and state licenses.
- You can call the IRS at 800-829-4933 if you can't find your paperwork with your company's EIN on it. You'll have to provide some information, but with the right details, they'll be able to supply you with your EIN.
In Florida, if you don't know a company's EIN, you can search for it online. You can conduct a search using the following identifying criteria:
- Business owner
If you're searching for a company that has subsidiaries, each one will have a different EIN.
