Mr. O’Brien received his German law training from the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität, where he graduated with the German equivalent of a J.D. in1986. In 1988, he received his J.D. from the State Universtiy of New York. Mr. O’Brien started his professional career as a research fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright and Competition Law in Munich, Germany, where he completed his master’s thesis in trademark law.
