Val has taught at Dominican University of California’s Graduate School of Business and International Studies (adjunct professor) and currently serves on the State Bar of California, Business Law Section, Subcommittee on Cyberspace Law. Val has lectured widely before various groups including the Association of Finnish Attorneys, the California Lawyers for the Arts, the California Arts Commission, Golden Gate Law School, Lorman Educational Seminars, San Francisco Bar Association, the Multimedia Development Group (SF), the North Bay Multimedia Association, SofTech and the Bay Area Multimedia Partnership, among others. His published articles include: “High Technology Litigation Before The International Trade Commission: A Respondent's Guide,” 2 Computer Law Reporter 982, republished in Protection of Intellectual Property Rights in Computer Products, Computer Law Reporter; “Making Services Fit For Cyberspace,” San Francisco Examiner; and “Commuting to the Law Office on the Information Superhighway: Virtually There,” Stanford Law & Policy.
His many civic associations have included: Board Member of the Marin Economic Forum, co-founder of the North Bay Software and Information Technology Association where he served as a member of its Board of Directors, founding member of the Bay Area Multimedia Partnership (BAMP) where he served on its initial Steering Committee and as Co-Chairman of its Law & Public Policy Committee, Board member of the American Judicature Society, Board member of American Jewish Committee Northern California Region, Judge Pro Tem and settlement conference panelist for the Marin County and San Francisco County Superior Courts, Mediator for the United States District Court, Northern District of California, Arbitrator for the State Bar of California, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), California Association of Realtors and American Arbitration Association. He has provided pro bono counsel to the Bay Area Economic Forum, Marin Civic Ballet, Marin Dance Theatre, Vector Theater Company, Marin Shakespeare Company and the San Francisco Writers’ Conference.
