While Erik Newton has helped hundreds of couples successfully navigate divorce proceedings, he remains passionate about creating healthy, long-lasting marriages through proactive communication and action. As partner in the San Francisco firm Heath-Newton LLP, Erik works in the areas of marriage and family law, child custody and complex asset division. After working on hundreds of divorce cases and witnessing his parents’ child custody struggle, Erik believes in marriage more than ever, but also recognizes that there is a right way to prepare for marriage as well as a right way to get divorced, if it comes to that.
Passionate about community service, education policy reform and marriage equality initiatives, Erik recently served on California Attorney General Kamala Harris’ transition team, where he helped craft state education policy. He is a youth mentor and advisory board member for the Spark Program, a Bay Area youth mentorship program, and serves on the board of directors for the North Beach Citizens, a homeless outreach program, and California Common Sense, a government transparency nonprofit. In addition, Erik serves on the board of advisors for The Journal of Law, Economics & Policy, a journal he founded while in law school.
A longtime California resident and graduate of George Mason University School of Law, Erik is also a Certified Executive Coach through Accomplishment coaching and certified mediator through the Center for Understanding in Conflict. He was recently selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers–Rising Stars Edition 2012 and named a Top Northern California Outstanding Lawyers by the American Registry.
