This past year was an incredible year for the UpCounsel team. From humble beginnings – it all started with an idea in The Grove on Fillmore – UpCounsel has emerged as a leader in the new freelance economy helping businesses of all sizes find an affordable and high-quality lawyer. In 2015, we saved our clients nearly $12 million in legal fees, and our top 10 attorneys realized more than $2 million in income from UpCounsel.

We’re helping make legal services more affordable and transparent, while helping attorneys work when and how they want. It was a memorable year but here are some of the highlights.

We doubled our team, again

Two of the values at UpCounsel are that we are here to: (1) change the status quo and (2) make the legal experience remarkable. In order to do that, we have to bring the absolute best people together. We look for entrepreneurs and builders with an insatiable desire to learn and who put the customer experience first. It wasn’t too long ago when it was just Mason and I working together on this seemingly crazy vision. Now, we have 30 amazing people working toward audacious goals and our mission of delivering a remarkable legal experience. It’s taken a village to get us here and what a village we have … Silicon Valley veterans, data aficionados, startup nerds, lawyers, musicians, diehard golf players, pilates devotees, yogis, Bluxome Street Winery zealots, rec basketball allstars, avalanche crushers, FTJP fanatics, potters, travel enthusiasts, amateur photographers and foodies. Our road to success in 2016 will be paved by continuing to add amazing people, and we plan to do precisely that.

We grew, a lot, and added some awesome customers

We saved our customers nearly $12 million in legal fees this year, and we’re just getting started. Now, more than 1,000 businesses start new legal projects on UpCounsel each month – that’s on top of the countless ongoing legal relationships UpCounsel facilitates. Mason and I can remember when that number was only 100 not too long ago. We’ve not only grown the number of customers using UpCounsel but also the types of businesses. We now work with companies across 20 industries from small startups to large public companies.

It’s impossible to discuss UpCounsel’s growth this past year without noting the rising tide of the B2B startups leveraging technology to help companies do more with less. We’re excited to be part of a movement empowering SMBs and helping entrepreneurs start companies on a budget, but there is still a long way to go. For example, did you know that seven million small businesses did not turn to the legal profession when presented with a legal need in 2014? Don’t worry, we’re working hard to get to you!

We continued to work with amazing lawyers

In 2015, from New York to California, we brought incredible attorneys into the UpCounsel community. We also had the pleasure of continuing to work with attorneys we’ve partnered with for years.

Wired identified UpCounsel as a leader in the gig economy – part of “a broader shift to an Internet-powered workforce.”  

Part of our shared vision at UpCounsel is to support the burgeoning freelance movement with tools that help lawyers focus their time on clients instead of administrative work, allowing them to better determine their own work-life balance. This is why we were so excited to see that our top 10 attorneys cumulatively made more than $2 million this year from UpCounsel. We’ve been working hard to support this new labor force, and we were thrilled to see UpCounsel named among the leaders in the space in a recent article in Wired – part of “a broader shift to an Internet-powered workforce.”

We built some cool stuff

This year, UpCounsel was named among the Best Entrepreneurial Companies in America by Entrepreneur magazine, which noted our “off-the-charts success.” The magazine listed us among startups that “melded dreaming with doing, who took risks, who dared to challenge convention.”

This is all thanks to our rock star product and marketplace teams who continue to push the edges of possibility. From easily finding to collaborating with the best attorneys, we introduced new features to make the customer experience simple, and most importantly, remarkable. For our attorney community, we introduced features to help reduce the burdens of business development and administrative tasks.

We were named among the Best Entrepreneurial Companies in America.  

As I sit back and look at our product roadmap for 2016, I’m excited and humbled by what our team has in store for both businesses and lawyers. Get excited!

We put a little money in the bank

This past year was marked by several big milestones for UpCounsel, including raising $10 million from Menlo Ventures. We’ve been fortunate to work with incredible investors like Homebrew and Metamorphic. As part of our most recent raise, we added Venky Ganesan to our board, and we couldn’t be more excited. Our investors’ marketplace experience and shared vision of the new labor economy make them fantastic partners as we continue our journey.

… And for 2016

Our team of all-stars are ready to accelerate the ship forward, so expect big things next year. But, one thing that won’t change is our mission … to deliver a remarkable legal experience for both businesses and lawyers.
