Business owners and professionals alike know the importance of delegating work.  It is both impractical and impossible for one person to handle every single responsibility within a company.  In order to build a successful business, one must learn how to effectively spread the workload by delegating the right tasks to the right people.  Check out UpCounsel’s tips to effective delegation:

  • Get over your fear of effective delegation or need to control every little thing. It might be hard for entrepreneurs to “let go” and let someone else shoulder some of the responsibility, but just remember that delegation is not the same as relinquishing control. You will still be in control of who is doing the work, how they are doing it, and what the outcome will be.
  • First, write down all of the tasks that you handle on a daily basis.  By making a physical list of responsibilities, you can easily identify which tasks must be handled by you and which tasks can potentially be handled by someone else. This might take a while, but you will only have to do this weekly or bi-weekly, and it will save you time and energy in the long run.
  • After deciding what you can delegate, you will have to pick the right person to handle the task. Consider a person’s experience, strengths, and weaknesses before deciding to delegate the work. Also, it will be easier for one person to handle tasks of a similar nature, so consider bundling responsibilities together.
  • It is very important to give your employee enough information about the task, including why this tasks needs to be completed, your expected outcome and the methods or outlets your employee should use in the process.  If your employee is unaware of a helpful resource, he or she could potentially waste your resources and time.  Make sure your employee feels comfortable asking for clarification so you don’t have to correct his or her work and spend time re-doing the task.
  • Because you wrote down the work that you decided to delegate, you can easily see who is handling the task, whether you gave proper instructions, and if you followed up with that person to ensure that the task is completed. Even though you delegated the task, you should not just walk away and consider the task completed. If your employee is in charge of a recurring task, make an effort to check-in with them to make sure the work is completed in an effective and consistent manner.
