With a patent, the government is granting the right to prevent others from practicing your invention. It's an artificial monopoly. Because it's such a big deal, the government wants to be VERY sure that what you have is truly something new and useful before they put their stamp of approval on it and allow you to corner that market. It takes skill and technical ability to convince and explain it to the USPTO and I have been doing this for several years.
